Bowel screening

The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP) offers a free home bowel screening kit for all eligible people aged 50-74 every 2 years for early detection and prevention of bowel cancer.

Breast screening

BreastScreen Victoria is a population-based screening program that aims to save lives and reduce the impact of breast cancer through early detection. Women aged 50-74 are invited for a free mammogram every 2 years. BreastScreen Victoria operates across a network of fixed and mobile screening clinics and assessment clinics in Victoria.

The National Cervical Screening programme (NCSP) reduces illness and death from cervical cancer. Women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74 years of age are invited to have a Cervical Screening Test every 5 years through their healthcare provider.

completed a bowel screening test kit in 2023, representing an increase of 26% compared to 2022.

Of those who completed their screening test kits in 2023, 206,693 (52.7%) were women and 185,056 (47.2%) were men.
Key insight
The highest number of persons screened
94,820
was among those aged 50-54, an increase of 24% between 2022 and 2023.
The lowest number of persons screened
61,560
was among the 55-59 age group.
In 2023, screening numbers increased across all age groups, except for the 55-59 age group. This age group returned the highest number of test kits for screening in 2022. Whilst screening numbers may fluctuate amongst the eligible population sub-groups, the numbers screening overall appear to be increasing. This is an encouraging result, but it is important to consider this number in conjunction with participation rates overall.
